Super Fruit Gooseberries (Amla)

Amla (Gooseberries)The Super Fruit Amla is cultivated throughout India and adjoining countries and has gained prominence as a “Super Fruit”.

Amla finds mention in the 5000-year-old ancient text of Ayurveda. When consumed, it balances all three energy sources Vata, Kapha, and Pitta in your body.

When Amla powder is taken along with sesame oil, it balances the Vata dosha like joint diseases and gas problems. For Pitta imbalance, indigestion, and skin problems like acne, you can have Amla along with ghee (clarified butter). For obesity and respiratory diseases, or Kapha imbalance, consuming Amla and honey is highly beneficial.

A high concentration of Vit C in Amla helps in the absorption of iron and minerals. It prevents sudden sugar spikes in diabetics. Numerous bioactive phytochemicals present in Amla have been reported to play a major role in the management of diabetes and related metabolic complications without any side effects.

Amla is good for eye health as it can ward off bacteria causing conjunctivitis and other related infections. Anti-oxidant properties of Amla prevent the formation of free radicals that stop forming bad cholesterol and cell damage.

Amla powder when mixed with honey and consumed helps in the purification of blood; when applied to the scalp, it prevents hair loss and protects against dandruff. Amla acts as a natural coolant for your body and can cause excessive dryness in some individuals. For some, it may cause frequent urination, cough, and cold. Taking Amla along with ghee resolves the issue.

Overall, Amla is beneficial for your health, safe for children, and for lactating mothers. Consult your doctor if you are taking any other allopathic medications as Amla can interact with these medicines.
